What are the benefits of adoption?

Adoption is an exciting way to add a new family member to your life while giving a child a chance at living with a loving family. U.S. adoption rates are lower than they were in the 70's, even though it's an accessible way to bring a child into your home.

There are many reasons to consider adoption for your family. Some are good for the environment, while others are good for a growing family. For instance, with the number of people on the planet, adoption can do some good. Bringing a child into your home when he or she has no one else supports that child while reducing population growth.

Another good reason to adopt is because the children need someone to care for them. With 153 million orphans around the world, it's more important than ever to adopt. In the United States, it's believed that over 80 million Americans have considered adoption, and every child in foster care would have a permanent home if only one in 500 chose to move forward, according to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

There are multiple ways to adopt, too. While private adoption is the route some people prefer, others use public adoption services. Adopting from foster care occurs through the public system, while international or adoptions within a family or private arrangement happen in the private system.

Adoption doesn't have to be as difficult as some would make it seem, and your attorney can help you through the process. Adopting through the public system can be inexpensive, and the Internal Revenue Service does provide some tax benefits in certain circumstances.
