Embryo donation may be a new alternative to adoption

When you want to have a child but can't, adoption is one alternative. Another option that some individuals are starting to consider is the adoption of fertilized embryos. This donation process is far cheaper than adopting a child, and it can be helpful for many families looking to have children. The one issue that could arise is that a child who was donated as an embryo now has two parents who are essentially adoptees and two who are biological, but they are being adopted before they're ever technically conceived.

Family law extends into many arenas, but one that may be fairly new is in vitro fertilization with people who have no actual relationship. There are people who freeze their extra embryos each year; when they're done having their families, what happens to those embryos? They can donate them to research or destroy them. There's a third possibility, though, and that's to donate them to others who want to have a child.

While adoptions can cost between $30,000 and $40,000, egg donation conversion into embryos is cheaper at $15,000 to $20,000. To receive a fertilized embryo through that method, families look at spending $25,000 to $30,000. To get an embryo donated, however, equals a fraction of these costs.

What may happen in the future is embryo adoption, which is actually performed by two parties; one wants to save their frozen embryos from research or destruction, and the other wants to have a child. How is this transfer treated, though, and is it really falling under family law? In some ways, it is. In Georgia, it's a traditional adoption in many ways. However, every state is different. In some, this is simply a property transfer.
